James Morton joins Gills on loan

Bristol City midfielder arrives on loan.

Steve Evans has completed a deadline day move for Bristol City midfielder, James Morton, on loan for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old, who has already made nine appearances in a short-term spell for Grimsby during the 2020/21 campaign, has been given squad number six and will be in contention for this Friday’s live televised game against Lincoln City at MEMS Priestfield Stadium (6pm).

James graduated from the youth system at Ashton Gate, having arrived at the age of 14.

In the summer of 2019 he was loaned out to Forest Green Rovers to gain some first team experience, and he played 17 times in total before returning to his parent club.

He made his debut for the Robins in an EFL Cup win over Exeter in September 2020 prior to joining Grimsby a month later, where he featured nine times, the last appearance coming against Newport County before Christmas.

On capturing his man, manager Steve Evans said:

“James is a very talented lad. He has signed a four-year contract at Bristol City so it demonstrates how highly thought of he is there.

“The lad has a brilliant left foot and gives us some wonderful balance in the middle of the pitch.

“Our supporters will love this lad and I am delighted he has chosen us over two clubs currently in the top 6 of League 1.”

An interview with the player will be available at a later date.
