Gills sign Robbie Cundy on loan

Bristol City defender arrives on loan.

Steve Evans has bolstered his defensive options with the capture of Robbie Cundy on loan for the rest of the season.

The 23-year-old Bristol City centre-back was recalled from a loan spell at Cambridge United on Monday, and the Gills boss has moved quickly to acquire the services of Robbie ahead of Tuesday’s visit of Crewe Alexandra in Sky Bet League 1.

Cundy, 6'2, came through the youth system at Oxford United, upon leaving Aston Villa, and made his professional debut in November 2015 in an EFL Trophy game against Dagenham and Redbridge.

The centre-back has played 51 games for Torquay United and Cambridge combined over the last 18 months, and was outstanding when he played against the Gills earlier this season at the Abbey Stadium in the Papa John’s Trophy, impressing in a 2-0 victory.

On capturing his man, Gills boss Steve Evans said: “I have tracked the lad since I first watched him for Bristol City in a closed door game last season, he was impressive.

“I was very impressed with him when he played against us earlier this season and obviously we have watched him since with interest.

“He is young and ambitious, he demonstrated very clearly he wanted to join us, we all wish him the very best."

Cundy has signed in time to be eligible for selection if Steve Evans includes him in his match day squad for tomorrow’s  game at home to Crewe, who are unbeaten in ten league games, and has been given squad number 25.
