Gills sign keeper Jake Turner

Permanent deal agreed for former Newcastle and Colchester keeper.

The Gills have added a second goalkeeper to their ranks in the space of a few days with the capture of former Newcastle United stopper, Jake Turner.

The 23-year-old, who was released by the Premier League club in June, joins Ashley Maynard-Brewer at MEMS Priestfield Stadium who signed on a season-long loan deal from Charlton Athletic on Tuesday.

Turner began his career in the academy at Bolton Wanderers and spent time on loan with Stalybridge Celtic and Darlington before signing for Newcastle in the summer of 2019. He made two appearances for the club’s U21 side during the 2019/20 Papa John’s Trophy, making his debut away at Macclesfield.

He joined Morecambe on a season-long loan in the summer of 2020, making 17 appearances and keeping three clean sheets before being recalled by the Magpies in early 2021.

Later that year he signed for Colchester United on loan, playing against the Gills in an EFL Trophy tie at the Weston Homes Community Stadium. He made 14 appearances in total before his deal came to an end.

Jake, who stands at roughly 6'4, has represented England at both U18 and U19 levels, he joins his new teammates at ME7 with immediate effect and could feature at Folkestone on Saturday.

Welcome to the club, Jake!
