Wright | "The Gaffer became a big pull for me"

Former Dagenham man eager to get started under the guidance of new boss, Neil Harris.

Defender Will Wright said he is “ready to go” after becoming the first signing of the summer at MEMS Priestfield ahead of the 2022/23 Sky Bet League Two season.

The 24-year-old, who has been on Neil Harris’ radar for some time, has made close to 150 appearances at Dagenham and Redbridge where he became club captain and a crowd favourite. After four years at the London club he is now looking forward to a new challenge at ME7.

“I’m really happy to sign the contract,” he said, speaking exclusively to the Gills club website. “Once I had spoken to the Gaffer, he become a big pull for me. The manager has such good pedigree and I know the staff that travel with him. It’s a great team to work with.

“I was at Dagenham for four years; one year on loan and three years permanent. It was a mixed journey to be honest but they have given me that platform to get back into the Football League.

“I can play centre-back, right wing-back, right-back; I’m comfortable in all those positions. Last season I played right in a back three and made that spot my own. If we play a back four then I am happy to play central or out on the right.

“I’m looking forward to getting started. Pre-season is always a slog but if you put the work in then hopefully you will get the rewards throughout the season.

“I’m hardworking, composed and I am a leader. I captained Dagenham last season. I like to take care of the ball. I have a good range of passing and like to drive out with the ball. I’m looking forward to showcasing all this next season at Gillingham.”
