Youth Report | Gillingham 1-1 Exeter City

Mark Moss speaks to the club website following 1-1 draw with Exeter at Beechings.

Gills were denied all three points in the dying seconds at Beechings when Exeter struck late in a 1-1 draw.

The hosts seemed on course to stay top of Merit League 1 with a 100% record when Bailey Akehurst’s penalty had given Mark Moss’ men the advantage, but a last gasp equalizer robbed the Gills of victory.

Speaking to Phill Catterick, Mark said: “During the first 20 minutes we started moving the ball quite nicely, we had a couple of half chances without ever really threatening. The game then sort of evened itself out towards half-time.

“A bit of individual brilliance from Kai [Garratt] got us a penalty, which Bailey scored. Generally we have been quite good defensively at holding what we have; we got deeper and deeper and, as we did, we gave away more set pieces around our box and ultimately in the 94th minute we paid the price.

“There were ten seconds left in the game! It was a funny one because we knew we hadn’t played well and in the end it just ended up being `let’s get through it` and get three wins from three and be top. We were not able to do it; I’m still pleased in terms of where we are, we have six big games left to try and finish as high as we can, but just a disappointing second half.”
