Youth Report | Portsmouth 1-2 Gillingham

The Gills U18's continued their fine form on Saturday with a win at Pompey.

Gills secured back-to-back wins in Merit League 1 following a 2-1 win over Portsmouth away from home on Saturday.

Elliott Moore and Sam Gale put Mark Moss’s side two goals to the good, and although Pompey pulled one back, the U18’s showed good character to see the game out and clinch three more points to go top of the table.

Moss said: “It’s a really good start and I’m really pleased but there are so many games to go. We are literally taking it a week at a time and not getting ahead of ourselves, because it’s only two wins.

“The performance was quite similar in some aspects to the week before [Southend at home] where we started quite well in the game, I felt like we were really in control of the game and we looked dangerous every time we went forward.

“We scored a really good goal for the first; we pressed it high, nicked it back through Josh Chambers. Ronald Sithole played in Elliott, his shot struck the keeper but followed in with the rebound. I was pleased with that as it came off the press, which we had spoken about.

“The second goal was a set piece, which was pleasing as we had often worked on them.

“After the interval we had a chance to go three up, we missed the opportunity, and they then had a free-kick which went straight in, through the wall. It was a bit of a scrap after that, we didn’t ever really have control of the game. They controlled possession but we defended quite well and restricted them to two chances, we had a couple ourselves.

“In the end we saw it through and showed good character."
