Team News:

Shaun Williams will more than likely miss the fixture due to a hamstring injury. Club captain Stuart O’Keefe, who returned to the team in Saturday’s draw to Barrow, could feature once again. Tuesday’s game is likely to come too soon for Ben Reeves, while Olly Lee will miss out again as he continues his recovery from injury.

Former Gillingham loanee Charlie Kelman could return to the Orient starting XI for Tuesday’s game. Theo Archibald, who scored twice in The O’s 3-2 win at Carlisle, should retain his place in the starting line-up.

Manager Comments:

Neil Harris - “We know that it’s going to be a challenge. Orient have been at this level for a few years now and have invested heavily over the summer. They’ve brought in some really good players.

“They’re a good side and we’re going to have to be at our best. We’re going to have to be much better than we were today [Saturday vs Barrow].”

Richie Wellens - "We need to get better at playing through the lines, and taking it on the back foot and things like that."

Previous Meetings:

The last meeting between the two clubs was in the FA Cup in November 2017. Gills came out on top with a 2-1 win. Gillingham took the lead after 20 minutes as Josh Parker headed Elliott List’s cross beyond Charlie Grainger.

It took until the 75th minute for the Gills to double their advantage. Tom Eaves did well to latch onto a long ball forward before outmuscling a defender and directing his shot across the goal and beyond Grainger.

Orient managed to get back in the game just four minutes later through James Dayton. He played a free-kick towards the near post hoping someone would get on the end of it, however, it evaded everybody and somehow sneaked in at the far post.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser, but Joe Widdowson’s red card would put a stop to those hopes. He received two yellow cards in quick succession during stoppage time as Gills managed to see the game out.

Gillingham’s last visit to Brisbane Road came during the 2014/15 season, in what proved to be a goal-fest. Orient took the lead in the 31st minute from the penalty spot. Lloyd James took the spot kick and blasted his effort beyond Glenn Morris, who guessed the right way.

That lead only lasted four minutes as Jermaine McGlashan brought the Gills back on level terms. Luke Norris played the ball into the six-yard box, where McGlashan was able to slot the ball into an empty net. Gills took the lead in the 43rd minute through Cody McDonald.

Bradley Dack curled a ball towards the penalty area, and McDonald managed to direct his header from just inside the penalty area towards the bottom corner as it squeezed past Alex Cisak.

Ten minutes after the break, Norris was brought down inside the area as Gillingham were awarded a penalty of their own. McDonald stepped up to score his second and give the Gills a 3-1 lead. Dean Henderson pulled a goal back for Orient. After seeing his initial shot saved by Morris, the rebound sat perfectly for him to volley into the back of the net.

The drama did not end there, as Josh Wright scored with five minutes remaining. The ball was cut back towards Wright as he managed to curl the ball towards the far corner and just out of the reach of Morris.
