Head Coach expecting a tough afternoon for Charlton cup tie.
Stephen Clemence says that Gillingham go into this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Charlton Athletic as underdogs but he believes, with the deafening Priestfield crowd behind his players, his men will have it in them to cause an upset.
The Addicks, who will make the short trip to ME7 from South London, have been in decent form of late and boast an array of talent, including 17-goal-hitman Alfie May. Clemence, however, is firmly of the mentality that the bigger they come, the harder they fall, as he plots a passage to the third round.
“Taking on an opponent from the higher division should be a challenge my players will be relishing,” said the Gills boss. “It will be a very tough game but if we can get through it who knows where we can go in the next round?
“I grew up wanting to play at Wembley and Anfield and White Hart Lane, these boys will be no different, this is the opportunity but you do have to beat opponents along the way from a higher division.
“We expect it to be a tough, tough game, we need our fans right behind us, to be that 12th man to really make it a difficult place for Charlton to play and that will be better for us as a team.
“They have a number of players we need to be aware of and like any team we play against, the lads will be prepared. They will know what they are coming up against and we have to make sure we implement our game on them and give them some problems as well.
“Charlton will be the favourites. They have good players, but so do we. The atmosphere will be fantastic and the lads are really looking forward to this one.”
