Stephen Clemence and his team prepare to take on Sutton for the club's final fixture of the 2023 calendar year.
Gillingham v Sutton United
Priestfield Stadium
Sky Bet League Two
Friday 29th December
Kick-Off, 7.45pm
Team News:
Robbie McKenzie and Dom Jefferies did not feature in the squad for Boxing Day’s game at home to Crawley Town, so both are potential doubts for the visit of Sutton United this Friday evening.
They will continue to be assessed by the medical staff up until kick-off. Otherwise, there are no other fitness concerns for Clemence to contend with ahead of this weekend’s fixture.
As for Sutton United, former Gills players Aiden O'Brien and Ryan Jackson are available for selection. The latter started in the 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon on Boxing Day.
Manager Comments:
Stephen Clemence: “I think if we put in the same effort against Sutton as we did in the second half against Crawley, we would expect at least two or three goals.
“I would be worried if we weren’t creating chances. We had three or four really good chances against Crawley, if we can recreate that against Sutton and create those chance again, you’d expect them to go in.
“We need to stick together as a club.
"I understand people’s frustrations, but all moving forward together, pulling in the same direction and we’ll get through what has been a difficult period.
“We’ve got a great crowd at Priestfield, we want to make it a really difficult place for opponents to come and visit.”
Jason Goodiffe: “To a man, they worked their socks off today. They worked for the shirt and that’s all you can ask for.
“There were some really pleasing performances. But it’s one game, we won’t get too carried away. Hopefully we can back that up."
Previous Meeting:
Our most recent encounter with Sutton United came in the opening fixtures of this season’s Sky Bet League Two campaign. The Gills travelled to the VBS Community Stadium having already picked up six points from an available six.
Going for a third win on the bounce, the Gills opened the scoring through Ashley Nadesan in the tenth minute.
The assist was provided by Tom Nichols, who had done well to win back possession high up the pitch, before sending in a pinpoint cross for our number 10 to tuck home and give the Gills the lead.
The hosts would have their opportunities to level the score throughout both halves but were unable to beat Jake Turner and a resolute Gillingham defence.
Three points and a third consecutive 1-0 win for the Gills.
