Will Wright addressed the media ahead of Gills trip to Swindon in League 2.
Gillingham defender Will Wright heaped praise on the club’s new signings and says it has set them up for an exciting second half of the season.
Manager Neil Harris has got his Gills players playing some lovely stuff at the moment and with his new recruits instantly gelling, Wright believes it is time to start looking up instead of down.
Ahead of this weekend’s clash with rivals Swindon Town, Wright sat down with the local media to discuss the positive vibes at ME7.
“Everyone at the club has been lifted,” said Wright. “The new signings have been great for the players here as we know there is real quality coming in the building. I’m not surprised how quickly things have clicked with the quality we have brought in. Sometimes when you bring in huge numbers, if they are not quite the right type, then it can take a while but with the type that we have brought in they have hit the ground running.
“Signings can sometimes flatter to deceive when you are just bringing in loads of bodies, especially if you are bringing in a load of young lads who are not quite ready. We are bringing in seasoned pros who are going to be good for the club.
“We back ourselves to keep the ball out and now we have some quality and confidence up front we can start putting teams away. We want to start clawing other teams into the relegation dogfight whilst trying to climb out and get away from it as soon as possible.”
The next stop and opportunity to pick up points is at the County Ground, where a Gills win could see them move out of the relegation zone. Swindon Town are riding high in sixth position and fighting for promotion, a position Wright is desperate to see Gillingham in next year.
“Gillingham is a massive club and deserves to be back in League One,” he said. “We need to put this club back on the map with our performances. With the new owners and the personnel they are bringing in and the personnel we have got already, next year we will be having a right go.
“Swindon are the next step for us, we want to test ourselves. We know where this club wants to be and will be next season. We want to test ourselves against these type of sides and see where we really are at. We want to be a proper side in this division.
“We are going to be on the front foot on Saturday and we will be proactive. We are going to give it everything we have got and give the fans something to be proud of.”
