Masterson | "You can see where the club is going"

Centre-back excited by Como trip.

Gillingham began their pre-season in convincing fashion as they carved out a hatful of goalscoring opportunities against fellow Kent side Dover Athletic.

The Gills, who put out a different 11 for each half, looked commanding throughout the entertaining encounter, firing four goals past the Whites without response.

Gutsy defender Conor Masterson, wearing the Captain's armband for the second period, notched Gills' third of the afternoon at Crabble Stadium. He spoke to local journalists following the game to discuss the team's confidence, the encouraging start and, of course, the excitement ahead of the club's visit to Como.

Return to action

"It's nice to get back on the grass. 45 minutes, another goal, I'm just enjoying being back.

"It's early days but you want to get in good habits. You want to start on the right foot and I think we did that today.

"Dover were a decent outfit today and they were a good test for us. The result was pleasing."

Competition for places

"There's sixteen or seventeen players fighting for a place. They all want that jersey and to be in the starting 11 for the first game of the season.

"It's good to have competition and it drives each player on. With that competition in the squad we can only get better, and that is what you want.

"I feel very good but it was hot today and you need to get those match-minutes into you. You can do all the running you want but those match-minutes is a totally different game. I'm feeling good but I need to get some more minutes on the pitch and just keep going."

Stockport in the league followed by Southampton in the cup

"Two tough fixtures to open the season, but we like them challenges. We are a good team now and we are confident in ourselves. We want to play these games and we are going to give these two teams a right good game."

Como

"I can't wait, I think it's a beautiful part of the world. I've been to Italy but not Como. It's great for Gillingham Football Club to be going there.

"I've been away a few times, Germany, Austria, America and Qatar. I've done a few nice ones but Como is a beautiful place and we are looking forward to it. We are all looking forward to it, doing well together and succeeding.

"It's an amazing fixture and you can just see where the club is going. We are going in the right direction, getting new players, winning games of football and everyone wants to be a part of it. It's brilliant to see.

"We are just buzzing to get out there. We will be building our fitness up for that first game of the season and we will be ready."
