Full-back delivers his verdict following Saturday's defeat to Millwall.
Gillingham returned to action at Priestfield Stadium on Saturday as preparations for the 2023/24 Sky Bet League Two season continued.
Defender Will Wright believes the club are leaving no stone unturned as they plan for a successful campaign and, despite succumbing 2-0 to Championship side Millwall in front of a bumper crowd, the Gills were very much in the game against a higher level opponent.
"It was a good exercise for us," said Wright. "No disrespect to Como but we were playing a tougher opponent in Millwall. There was little in it. In the grand scheme of the game, it was two mistakes that gifted them the goals.
"Millwall are in a place that we aspire to be. We played Dover, who are two steps down, and Como are pretty much our level, so it's been well designed that we are stepping up slowly.
"You have got to test yourselves against these teams in pre-season to really find where you are at.
"I feel fit and it was great to get some minutes. It was nice to come on, I felt fresh. I think as a team we are getting there.
"We are looking to play on the front foot this year. When you look at what is going on at the club it is big and it seems to be growing. I want to be playing, so I am going to do my utmost to get into the side. I want to enjoy the ride that we are going to go on."
