Gills sign Max Clark

Neil Harris has added a left-back to his squad ahead of the 2023/24 season with the capture of former Hull City defender, Max Clark.

Gillingham have clinched the permanent signing of promotion winning defender, Max Clark.

The 27-year-old left-back arrives at Priestfield having been released by Stevenage in May, having been part of the squad that won promotion to League 1.

Clark, who has also played for Fleetwood and Rochdale, came through the youth system at Hull but made his professional debut while on loan with Cambridge in March 2016 in a League 2 fixture at Bristol Rovers.

Following a second loan spell at the Abbey Stadium, Max signed for Vitesse in Holland in the summer of 2018 having turned down a new offer from Hull. He played 49 times and scored three goals before returning to the MKM Stadium three years later for a second spell.

He joined Stevenage last summer and played 47 times, scoring once in the process, to help the club win automatic promotion to the third tier.

On capturing his second signing of the week, manager Neil Harris said: "Max is, first and foremost, a promotion winning player from last season which shows his pedigree and his calibre.

"He is a player I have tried to sign in the past; I tried to take him to the Championship but he went abroad. He is a left-back who can defend but he has unbelievable quality on the Football. He's a good character and comes highly recommended."

Clark, who has represented England at U16 and U17 level, added: "I am delighted to sign here, it's a great club. I played with Robbie McKenzie at Hull too; he spoke so highly of the place and it's nice to be back with him in the same team.

"I am an attack minded left-back, I work hard and give my all. I will fight for the team and the staff."
