Gills midfielder reacts after scoring dramatic late winner against promotion chasers Carlisle.
Shaun Williams’ dramatic last-minute winner set off the wildest goal celebrations of the season at MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Saturday with a roar so loud it nearly blew the roof off.
The ever-dependable 36-year-old midfielder put in a Man of the Match performance against Carlisle on Saturday and it felt right that it was his fine finish that secured the 1-0 victory and three points as Gills notched up an incredible seventh home win from eight at ME7.
“It doesn’t get much better than that,” said Williams after the game. “A last minute winner is everything that you want.
“It’s either me or Timmy (Dieng) who go forward the majority of the time. Tim was tiring, he was like ‘go on, go on’, because I had a bit of a spring in my step. Just before the goal I got fouled by the centre-half and then the next opportunity it went forward again and Timmy was like, ‘go on, I’m knackered’ and luckily it fell to me in the right area. I caught it so well and it went in.
“We had a good solid performance for the 90 minutes and then fortunately one fell for us at the right time. If it was on my right foot it probably would have cleared the stand, luckily it was on my left and I caught it well.
“There is no better feeling than scoring and if the team wins it’s even better.
“I am just trying my hardest when I can. I love the culture that the gaffer has brought to the club and everything behind the scenes, it seems like the right place to be. The quality has gone up and we'll now try to win as many as we can."
