Squad excited ahead of the game against Wrexham, says Conor Masterson.
Conor Masterson heaped praised on Gillingham’s new First-Team Head Coach Stephen Clemence and said the squad is raring to go ahead of Saturday's fixture at Wrexham.
Clemence just recently took over the reins at ME7 and Masterson believes it is only a matter of time until the team are firing on all cylinders and climbing the table.
“I can’t speak highly enough of the new boss,” said the defender, ahead of this weekend’s clash with Wrexham. “Everyone’s enjoying the training sessions. There have been new ideas and it has been exciting. I think everyone is embracing it.
“He wants me to use the ball more and step into midfield and pass the ball, he has told me he will never stop me from playing. We will need to organise quicker and get into the right positions when we do lose the ball so we can win it back and go and attack again.
“It's great for me and my fellow centre-halves and we are enjoying it so far, and long may it continue.
“The Gaffer tries different things in training and he wants us to keep the ball on the floor. We played a game in training where the ball wasn’t allowed to go over head height, just little things like that. He wants us to express ourselves because we have a lot of talented players in this team.
“Robbie Stockdale and Stephen Clemence have both been brilliant, we know what direction we are going in and we are looking forward to it. I think it is really going to push on the players that we have.”
Opponents do not come much trickier then in-form side Wrexham, but Masterson says there is no better team to play to get back on track.
“Wrexham play quite direct and it will be a busy afternoon for us,” he predicted. “We will have to be ready.
“We want to get back to winning ways and what better game than Wrexham away, it should be a good one. To get one over on them would be a great confidence-booster for us. We are excited and raring to go.”
