Mahoney | "I'm enjoying my time here"

Gills loanee enjoying his spell in Kent.

Connor Mahoney says he is enjoying his loan spell at Priestfield and is relishing getting regular playing time.

The Gills welcomed Nigel Clough’s unbeaten Mansfield Town to Priestfield over the weekend, knowing that the league’s “in form” team would present them with their sternest test of the 23/24 league season so far.

After taking an early lead through Macauley Bonne’s first goal of his Gills career, assisted by Mahoney, Gillingham put in a solid first half performance that would have warranted the home side entering the break on top.

Mansfield equalised before the break with neither side able to bag a second goal following the interval.

Connor Mahoney shared his thoughts after the game:

On drawing with Mansfield

“I thought in the first half we were solid. We started really well against a top, top side. It’s a massive point for us and we just need to look forward to Tuesday’s game now. Hopefully we can back it up with three points from that game.

“I haven’t seen the referee’s decision back, but that’s something we’ll re-assess and understand what we could have done better.

“Mansfield are a very difficult team to play against. They’re going to be up there in the top positions at the end of the season, but I think we dealt with them superbly in the first half. Overall, it’s a good point for us.

On assisting and play time

“Yeah, I’m loving my time here.

"The main reason for why I decided to join Gillingham was to get back out there on the pitch, playing every week. I’m thankful to the gaffer for putting that trust in me.

“I’m buzzing for Macauley to get the goal.

"He’s been playing superbly for us, he’s a real focal point up front and all he’s needed is that cutting edge. I was made up today to be able to assist him.

“The gaffer brought me in to create and to try and give us that extra impetus up front. I’ve set up a few of them now and I got the goal the other week, that’s my job at the end of the day. I’m really enjoying my time here so far.”
