Gills boss previews the visit of Morecambe in Sky Bet League Two.
Neil Harris has warned his players that they will need to bring their ‘A’ game to Priestfield Stadium on Saturday when they face Morecambe.
Harris’ men sit proudly on top of Sky Bet League Two after a fantastic run of results in the early stages of the season but the Gills boss will be taking nothing for granted at the weekend.
“They are a good side,” warned Harris. “Morecambe have real energy and quality at the top end of the pitch and experience in defensive areas of the pitch. It’s another tough game against a team who have had a solid start and are as good as anybody in the league on their day.
“Anybody who thinks that we are just going to turn up and beat Morecambe needs to change their mindset, they are a really good side who were narrowly relegated last season and have aspirations to go back up again.
“I am expecting cooler weather, so we should play with more intensity than we did against Harrogate. The back-to-back home wins have given the lads and the football club a massive lift.
“We know that we are still work in progress and we have loads of improvement to do, but to have five wins and be top of the table and have those back-to-back home wins is really important going into this one.”
Harris has said he is delighted to be leading the League Two pack but it will take a dozen games to get a real measure of where his team are.
“I have always gone with 12 games,” said Harris. “Only because, after those first 12 games I would have seen every team in the league, either played them, seen them live or on video at least two or three times. I’ll have a gauge of where all the teams are at.
“You have to get to 12 games to really get a gauge on it. Every team will have an injury scenario in the first three months of the season and I am hoping we have had ours now. I will look after 12 games and take stock for the first time and review that period and see where we are at. I will look, start judging and be looking at the next transfer window.
“We need to do more to get the fans off their bums and the lads know it. They need me to be energetic on the sidelines and they need the fans as well, we all need to be one. We need to be together. We need the fans sticking with us and driving us.
“It will be a good match on Saturday. I want us to be difficult to play against. I want us to ask questions of the opponent.”
