Shaun Williams delighted to register victory over Harrogate on Saturday in difficult conditions.
Shaun Williams says that three points are all that matters after the Gills captain scored a 95th minute winner against Harrogate at Priestfield to make it five wins out of seven in League Two.
Gills are now top of the table as a result.
Not only did Neil Harris’ side have to contend with ongoing injuries to key players, but the extreme heat over the weekend also meant that taking all three points away from this home fixture would be hugely challenging.
Shaun spoke to the media after the win:
Beating Harrogate
“Getting the three points is all that matters at the end of the day.
"You could play a team off the park and still find yourself on the wrong end of the result, so making sure we got the win was the main thing.
“Harrogate gave us the respect that I think we deserve at home, putting men behind the ball. Our overall form since the start of the season warrants that.
“You’re not going to get handed a win in this league, it’s incredibly competitive. We try to approach each match in the same way, we can’t get too excited when we win, or let ourselves get too down when we lose.”
His late winner
“It just fell to me in the right area. The manager tells us to always stay on the move in the box and luckily it just dropped for me.
“Those moments are what you play football for, but It’s a team game. I’m not really one for personal accolades. Anything I can do to help the team win then I’m happy with that.”
On playing in the heat
“Yeah, it was boiling out there, it was tough.
"Even when the boys were in the tunnel, you could feel that it was going to be a difficult day.
“I’ve not played in those conditions too often before.
"There was a pre-season game against Crystal Palace last season that I remember was similar. Luckily, we’ve managed to come through it with a win.”
Being top of the league
“It’s a nice place to be. We’ve won five from seven in the league so we’re moving in the right direction.
“It’s early days though so we need to just take each game as it comes and look to Morecambe next Saturday. We’ll take each week as it comes, onwards and upwards.”
