Atmosphere created prior to kick-off on Tuesday made a huge difference, says Robbie Stockdale.
It was a goosebumps moment at Priestfield Stadium on Tuesday night when thousands of emotionally-charged fans came together to fly blue and white flags and hold Gills scarves proudly aloft as they belted out a spine-tingling rendition of The Last Waltz just before kick-off.
Tannoy announcements had indicated that the club were trialling 'something a bit different tonight' to create an atmosphere and the Priestfield faithful certainly did not disappoint. Gills' assistant head coach said that the powerful eruption of the stirring song did not go unnoticed by the grateful players.
"The Last Waltz was brilliant, first and foremost," said Stockdale. "I thought it was a great effort from the supporters. It really made a difference.
"I have been very fortunate to coach and play at some of the best crowds in Europe and in the world. That support at the start of the game was fantastic and I hope it continues.
"We came out and we heard that it was going to happen. It was one of those moments and we just felt that this is really going to help us.
"To have that backing straight away can only help and it's up to the players to carry on and give those supporters something to cheer about.
"When you get that backing at the start of the game it 100 percent lifts the players. The supporters played their part for the Football Club and it was amazing."
