Clemence | "We have to start taking our opportunities"

Head Coach reacts to the narrow defeat at Stadium MK.

Missed opportunities were the point of frustration for Gillingham Head Coach Stephen Clemence, as Gillingham lost 2-1 against MK Dons on Saturday.

Having had many chances throughout the game to break the deadlock, the hosts opened the scoring with a little over ten minutes remaining when MJ Williams found the back of the net. Alex Gilbey doubled the advantage and, although Josh Walker scored on his Gillingham debut at the beginning of stoppage time, it was too late.

Gills created plenty throughout the game but could not find the opening goal, which disappointed Clemence, who knows that his side needs to find that clinical edge if they are to make something of the season.

With the transfer window closing in the coming days, the Gills Head Coach offered an update of what to expect. He also provided an update on Oli Hawkins, who was forced off during the first half with an apparent groin strain.

Thoughts on the game...

I felt that we had the best chances. Unfortunately, we haven't taken those chances, and if we don't start taking more of them, we might just be a nearly team that has good players who can affect a game. If we want to do anything, we have got to start taking those chances.

The only thing that matters to me is winning football matches. I felt that although we lost the game, we deserved to win it. To not even get a draw is very disappointing. The lads did deserve something, but it is the fine details. We get beat off a second phase on a corner, and we also get done on the counter-attack from our own goal-kick.

Taking our chances...

If we want to do anything, you have to start taking some of those opportunities. When we are putting teams under that amount of pressure- there were good chances in the first half, and there were good chances in the second half. We have got to capitalise. That is what good teams do.

I believe that we have got good players at the Football Club. I really do. I believe in this group, but we have got to start delivering. When they get their opportunities, they have got to take responsibility and put the ball in the back of the net. That's just not the forwards, it's everybody.

Update on Oli Hawkins...

He has got a slight groin strain, so we will have to assess that when he comes in tomorrow. We do not think that it is a bad groin strain, but sometimes you get a niggle in your groin, and you are still out for two to three weeks. I am hoping that it is not, and it has just cramped up on him a little bit.

Transfer window update...

I am expecting that there might be one or two that go out the door, but I don't want to talk about that until that happens. It would not be fair to anybody.

Looking ahead...

We have got to dust ourselves down, as I said before, and come back in on Monday, and we work towards the Walsall game next week. It's a game I cannot wait to get to already. I wish it was on Tuesday.
