Robbie Stockdale says the team will remain level-headed with plenty to work on following a strong end to the festive period.
Gillingham's Assistant Head Coach, Robbie Stockdale, believes that 'there is a lot more to come from these players' after the team celebrated a winning start to 2024.
The Gills showed plenty of attacking intent, twice hitting the woodwork, and Scott Malone made it two goals in as many games as they sank Colchester in a fruitful January 1st fixture.
"We are heading in the right direction," said a pleased Stockdale after the final whistle. "The effort from the players was fantastic. We’ve won a couple of games and I don’t think we are anywhere near the finished article of what the players are capable of.
"We have hit the bar, hit the post and their keeper has made numerous saves, we built a lot of pressure. The chances we are creating are really positive and on another day we could have had two or three.
"We are a work in progress and we are getting there. It will take time, but the one thing in football is people want success yesterday. We are level-headed.
"Thank you to the 998 fans who came along, they were brilliant. When the players needed a lift, and everybody does, the supporters were backing them. They were really loud, as they were for the home game a couple of days ago.
"All credit to them, they have spent a lot of money supporting the team over Christmas and the new year, to have this following is outstanding. It shows what a big club we can be.
"It's a two-way thing, we need to give them something to shout about. I thought both sides, players and fans, did themselves proud today. Hopefully our fans are going home happy!
"Now we look forward to Sheffield United in the FA Cup, what a game, we are going to have to be at our very best and that includes the supporters again. They are a Premier League team with Premier League players, so we are going to have to make it really uncomfortable for them."
