Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth says he is pleased that his side are making more chances following the 1-1 draw at home to Swindon Town at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Joe Gbode came off the bench to score the opening goal in a second successive game, but Gills were pegged back by Will Wright's free-kick from distance.
Gills have found the back of the net more consistently since Ainsworth took charge of the Football Club, and he intends to improve the goal-scoring issues.
With the 2024/25 campaign coming to an end next week, the Gillingham manager previewed the Port Vale fixture, who are looking to win the League Two title.
Discussing the game...
We cancelled each other out in the first half. I thought that they got the ball down better than us. I am not going to rose-tint this, but there were no chances. We defend so well. I am really pleased that we have got this to build on, but in the second half, I thought that we were the aggressors.
It was a magic moment for the goal. It was a great pass from Aaron [Rowe] into Joe [Gbode] and a great finish.
I think there were one or two shots on target from Swindon. Nothing major. I know the free-kick is a brilliant free-kick. I think that Glenn [Morris] was trying to step, because his vision was impaired, and it just caught him off at the right time.
Chance creation...
We are creating more chances. That was the one thing that I was told when I came in, that we haven't got a goal scorer in the building. I am thinking, right, have we, or do we not create enough easy chances for the goal scorers? You look deeper into just going, 'Right, get me a goal scorer'. There are all sorts of reasons why. You see some of the forward play. You're seeing the team emptying the tank, and you're seeing the team trying things.
The goal was something special. It was a really nice goal today.
Goal scoring has been an issue, but I intend to improve that.
The two red cards...
[Joe Gbode's red card] - I don't know what has gone on. I will have to watch the video. There is a scuffle at the goalmouth, which the assistant referee has called it. Unfortunately, Joe has got a second yellow.
Just before that, Jonny gets sent off for a second yellow. I think he said that it was his first red card.
I don't want red cards, but I like the fight in them. I like that they are standing up for themselves.
Looking to Port Vale...
Losing a couple of players is a concern for next week, but thank goodness Port Vale have been promoted. Well done. They are one of my old teams and a team that means a lot to me. They're up there now, which is great. I know that they will be going for the title next week, but we will have a full-blooded row about that and see where we can end up.
