Clark | "It was nice to score in front of the fans"

Clarky

Max Clark scored a late equalizer to earn Gillingham a point in their 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley on Saturday afternoon.

The left-back scored four minutes into second-half stoppage time, rifling his shot beyond Billy Crellin in the Accrington goal. Clark discussed the goal and how the set piece routine which led to it came together.

It was John Coleman's return to the Wham Stadium, and Clark felt the occasion added to a physical and competitive fixture.

Glenn Morris made a superb double save during the first half to keep the game goalless, and the left-back was full of praise for the goalkeeper.

There were 351 Gillingham supporters at the Wham Stadium for the fixture, and the 29-year-old was pleased to score in front of the visiting fans.

On the goal...

We had plenty of set pieces in and around the box in the second half, and a few weren't working, so we tried something different. When Max Ehmer came on, he kind of set it up. He made a block and Litts [Armani Little] was clever enough to find me, and I just hit it and hoped for the best, really.

It was nice to get the goal and get us back in the game. It was important because in the second half we were in their half a lot.

When you're that close, you have to hit it as hard as you can and make sure that it is on target. That's what I did, and luckily, it went in. I'm happy, but I would be more happy if we had got the three points.

Discussing the game...

I think that we need to be better on the ball. During the first half, we had a game plan. I thought that in the first 20 minutes, we would put it on them a bit more, which we did. In the second half I thought that we played a lot better. We were in their half and linked up better. We played more football, and I think that it was probably a fair result in the end.

I thought that the strikers did well today because they were getting manhandled at times. They know their game, and we knew that coming here, they would be all over it. With it being the Gaffer's old team, it brought a little bit more of a spark.

It's enjoyable to play in because that's what we play for.

On Glenn Morris...

Glenn is an unbelievable goalkeeper. He is probably one of the best shot-stoppers that I have played with in terms of that he keeps you in the game. I thought that during the first half, they didn't have much, then all of a sudden, they had two great chances, and he was there. He always is for us.

He works hard every day and comes in and looks like a 21-year-old, honestly. He is an unbelievable guy. You see that he has quality, even at the age now. He's still going!

I don't even know when he will stop because he has still got it in him. He kept us in the game and he has done many times this season, as you have seen. He is a great guy.

The travelling support...

It was nice to score in front of them. They always travel in great numbers. It doesn't matter where we go; they have turned up in great numbers all season. We have to thank them for backing us, and it's nice to score in front of them.
