Clark | "We are only going to get better"

Clark

Gillingham left-back Max Clark was on the scoresheet again as he scored the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Harrogate Town in Gareth Ainsworth’s first game in charge.

It has been a busy week for the Gills and, having been a goal down to their hosts, Clark was delighted with the togetherness everybody showed.

The left-back scored in a second successive away game, but this time from the penalty spot. Clark discussed how it all came to be.

There were 501 Gillingham supporters at Harrogate, and Clark was full of praise for their efforts not just on Saturday but throughout the entire campaign.

Togetherness in the squad…

I thought that in the first half it was a bit sloppy, but we were trying to stay in the game, and the wind did play a massive part. Coming here is always hard, but like I said, we stuck together and came back from a goal behind and showed real togetherness today.

It was one of those scrappy games where you take a point away from home, and that’s what we did. We showed the grit and togetherness in the second half, coming back from a goal behind.

I think you saw that. We had a togetherness out there, and I think that’s what we’re going to do until the end of the season. Just fight for each other and we’re all as one. Whether you’re on the bench or not, you have to be ready and back each other.

On taking the penalty…

We spoke about it before the game. I think that Andy [Smith] was trying to do it so no one would put me off, so it was clever from Andy. We spoke about it before the game, and he [the manager] asked me if I fancied being on pens. Obviously, I took it, didn’t I! Straight away!

I don’t think we’ve had many penalties this season, so I was buzzing when it came. I was confident and knew straight away where I wanted it.

On working with Gareth Ainsworth…

He’s come in and I’m really enjoying working with him so far. It has only been a couple of days, but he demands standards, and he demands quality. He gives a real togetherness to the group. I’m really enjoying working with him.

I like the way that he works and I like the way he goes about things. I think that we are all loving working with him so far. He has put a real stamp on himself, and Dobbo [Richard Dobson] as well coming in. You can see that we’re only going to get better. We’ve only worked with him for two days on the training pitch, and we’ve got so much more to learn and what they want of us.

I just like the way he works. He demands quality and standards.

The travelling support…

It’s unbelievable! Honestly! When you see them behind the goal. They’ve backed us all season.

They always turn up in numbers, but 500, it’s a long trip away and we have to be thankful for them. We can’t ask any more from them. It’s been like that all season, so to get the goal and point for them it was good for us.
