Jayden Clarke was pleased to play his first full 90 minutes of the season in Gillingham's 1-0 win against Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium.
It was a tough afternoon for the Gills, with Morecambe making life for their visitors difficult throughout. Clarke admitted that the conditions did make a difference, but it was something Gillingham used to their advantage in the second half.
Clarke assisted George Lapslie's match-winner, getting him off the mark for goal contributions for the season.
Thoughts on the game...
When you come to a place like Morecambe, you know it is going to be tough. It's not going to be easy, and they are going to make it hard for you. In the first half, we knew that with the wind, it was going to be hard, and they were going to be on us, so it was getting through that first half.
When we came in at half-time, we said that it was our time with the wind to get at them, and I think that we did pretty well in the second half with the ball. Luckily, we managed to get the goal.
It has been a while since I played 90 minutes. I am feeling it now, but we got the three points, which is the main thing, so I will just rest up and get ready for Fleetwood next week.
Involvement in the goal...
We had a corner, and then it somehow came back out to Hutts [Remeao Hutton], who took the corner, and he then dropped it into Shad [Ogie], who had a shot. Luckily, I was in the right place at the right time, and I have put it back into a dangerous area, and Lapo was there to tap it in.
Oli Hawkins and George Lapslie's impact on the game...
They were both really good when they came on and changed the whole game. Hawks up top, holding it up and bringing players into play, and Lapo doing what he does, running around and popping up at the right place at the right time, so I'm happy for both of them.
Personal goals...
As I said before the last time I spoke to you, I did a lot of work in the summer and I feel a lot better for it. Hopefully, I can build on it. I managed to get my first assist today, so hopefully, I can build on that and get more goals and assists.
I have set myself a little goal, but I keep that one to myself. We will see.
Working under the new coaching staff...
At the moment, it has been in glimpses. As I said, it's still early, so I am pretty sure that the more we work together, the more we are going to see it on a more consistent basis.
It has been really clear. I think that everyone knows their own job very well and has a good understanding of someone else's job. I think you can see it at times. It has only been in glimpses so far, but it has been really good. I am enjoying it.
