Clarke | "It's fine margins"

Jayden Clarke scored his fourth goal of the season on Saturday at Valley Parade, but it wasn't enough as Gillingham fell to a 2-1 defeat against Bradford City.

Clarke was pleased with the build-up for his goal, which he capped off by playing the ball off the post before it went in. However, the wide man knows that it would be viewed more fondly had they come away with a result.

The 23-year-old has been a regular fixture in the starting XI this season, something he is grateful for, and is now determined on achieving a positive result on Tuesday at home to Newport.

Thoughts on the game...
I thought that before they scored, we were really good. The running off the ball was good, and on the ball was good. It's unlike us to concede from two set pieces. Apart from that, I don't think the performance was bad. If we keep playing like that, I'm sure results will come with it.

It's fine margins. There was one where Hawks [Oli Hawkins] headed it back, and me and Ethan [Coleman] just missed it. If that goes into the net, then we're two-nil up. I think that their goal came against the run of play, but that's football.

His goal...
To be fair, with the first touch, I thought I had lost control a little bit and even with the strike, I did slice it a little bit. You need luck sometimes.

It was a good goal. The running off the ball from Lappo, [George Lapslie] and then to Timmy [Dieng] and back to me. It was a good goal.

It was a good move. It was something that we looked at before the game down that side. It actually came off. I'm happy to get another goal, but it would have been better coming away with something.

The manager's trust in him...
I'm thankful to the manager for putting trust in me. I'm trying to keep repaying him by having goal involvements, which I have. I need to try and keep building on that, but the bigger picture is the three points that we need to give back to him. I'm sure that, eventually, it's going to turn if we keep performing how we did today.

Looking ahead...
It's still early in the season. It has been a bad few games in terms of results, but we are looking to win every game. Hopefully, we can do that on Tuesday.

We need to try and put it right and get the win.
