Gillingham have added to their forward options with the capture of Jacob Wakeling on a season-long loan from Peterborough United.

The 22-year-old trained with his new teammates for the first time on Thursday and could feature at Woking on Saturday in the club’s final pre-season friendly before the league campaign gets underway on August 10.

The striker began his career in the youth ranks at West Bromwich Albion but was released in 2020. After playing in non-league with Alvechurch he signed for Leicester City in November of the same year and made his first competitive appearance away at Tranmere in an EFL Trophy tie in January 2021, scoring on his debut.

In 2021/22, after scoring in the same competition for the Foxes, he joined Barrow on loan and made four appearances before joining Swindon on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.

In his first full season at the County Ground he scored eight times in 46 appearances, alerting intertest form Peterborough who captured his signature on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee last September.

An interview with the player will be available in due course.
