Morris | "It was a real team performance"

Glenn Morris was delighted to earn all three points in Gillingham's 1-0 win against Chesterfield at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

On the day that the goalkeeper became the oldest player to make a league appearance for the Football Club, Morris was pleased to see the togetherness amongst the squad throughout the game, especially after going down to ten men on the hour mark.

Morris started the game after Jake Turner suffered an injury, keeping a clean sheet on his return to the starting XI. He credited the tight-knit atmosphere within the goalkeeping room, which has allowed whoever steps in between the sticks to succeed.

Gills found themselves with their backs to the wall during the second half, but with the Rainham End behind them, Morris believes that their support gave the team that added boost to continue fighting until the final whistle.

Thoughts on the game...

We didn't start the game great. They got at us early doors, we gave a few fouls away, and they hit the crossbar with the free-kick, but we came into that first half and felt that we were creating chances and were stamping our authority on the game.

In the second half, we hit the post with a header, and then, Max [Ehmer] gets sent off. They can be turning points in games, but you could see the togetherness from the boys. We were pulling together and sticking as a group to make sure that we didn't let a goal in. That's what we had to do. We all had to put a performance in today. It was a real team performance all-round.

I am delighted to get a clean sheet and the win.

On managing the game...

The last 20 minutes felt long, but we had to see it out, and we had to run the clock down. We had to do all of those things. We had to really stick together. It was a real shift as a team. I don't think that anyone let us down.

They had a goal disallowed as well. It's the little things that went in our favour, and we have got to use that momentum going into next week and the week after that.

The goalkeeper union...

We've got a great unit in here where we all want everyone to do well as a team and as a goalkeeping collective. If Jake [Turner] plays and keeps a clean sheet, me, Deren [Ibrahim] and Taite [Holtam], we are all really pleased for him and for us as a group.

We feel that we have done our bit, and I am sure that will happen if I play or if Luca [Ashby-Hammond] plays. We just get on with it.

We just want to keep keeping clean sheets and to keep winning games. The main goal is Gillingham to do well, not just us individually.

The impact of the Rainham End during the second half...

Both teams [Carlisle and Chesterfield] have come here and changed us round, so they obviously feel that it's a weapon for us. As the game went, it probably did help us. Down to ten men, and they lifted us in the last ten minutes. I remember hearing them, and it really pushes you.

If they [the players] have got the Rainham End helping them out, then it is like having another man as well.
