Nevitt | "I feel like I am getting more confident"

Nev

Elliott Nevitt was delighted to get back on the scoresheet for a second successive game, as Gillingham drew 1-1 at Chesterfield on Tuesday night.

The striker believes he is growing in confidence and is hoping that he can add to his goal tally by the season’s end.

Nevitt thought the Gills played very well in the first half but admits the second half was much tougher, especially with Chesterfield pushing bodies forward.

The 28-year-old is looking ahead to the final fixtures of the campaign but also reflected on what has been a frustrating first season in ME7.

On his goal…

I’m really happy to score. As I said before, I felt like it was just a matter of time, and it was about sticking with it and believing in myself. I always knew that I was going to score goals, but I’m disappointed that it took this long to do it. I’m happy that they’re finally coming.

It was good. I really enjoyed it. I feel like they’re the goals that I like scoring. Being in the box and wanting to hit the net. It was another early goal in the game. I wanted to score another, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Assessment of the game…

It was tough. I felt that in the first half, we did really well, and coming out in the second half, they were going, and the fans were getting on them and lifting them up. I felt that it was tough for us especially. We were trying to hold onto our lead, and they nicked it, which hurt a lot of our players. I could see that it hurt us. Near the end, it was just about getting the draw.

I felt that I could have scored at the end, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Scoring in successive games…

I feel like I’m getting more confident. That’s what it is. I feel like, at the beginning, the chances I should have been scoring weren’t going in. In the last two games, the two chances that fell for me have both gone in. It’s just about being confident and I can’t wait for the next games now.

Looking ahead and being reflective…

Seven games unbeaten is good. We would have loved to have had a few more wins in there, but it’s a big turn for us as a group. I feel like the lads feel the momentum changing, but it’s towards the end of the season now, so we need to finish strong and bring it into the next season.

It’s all about finishing the season strong and enjoying playing football again. It’s been tough this season with some of the performances. They haven’t been good enough and it’s been hard on the players. We just want to be out there and enjoying it and playing for the fans and all as a club enjoying Gillingham playing football and winning games.
