Gillingham midfielder Jonny Williams stated that it was disappointing to not get the three points against a travelling Colchester United side on Tuesday evening, but said that the players felt the energy and noise from the crowd and look to bounce back again on the weekend as the Gills travel to Salford.
Williams was voted as the sponsors' ‘Man of The Match’ following his performance. The Gills midfielder discussed how when you get an opportunity you must take it, which comes after playing 170 minutes in the past two games. Despite two draws on the spin, Ainsworth’s side now look to grab a victory on the road against a difficult Salford who look to make a final push for the play-offs as the season heads into the final stages.
Discussion on the game....
I think we deserved three points, and it was frustrating to concede the first goal, but we bounced back again which is twice in two or three days we have come from a goal down and it shows great character within the group to come back and put in that performance.
We have things to work on, it wasn't a perfect performance, and we still need to score more goals, but we cut them out most of the game and barely gave them anything apart from that goal right at the start. That comes from the front, the energy, the pressing, forcing them to kick the ball off the pitch to ensure we remain on the front foot and get the crowd behind us.
The crowd were brilliant tonight, and we fed off them like they fed off us, overall, it was a good night the only thing that was missing was the three points, but we enjoyed playing for each other.
View on his season...
It's been a frustrating season for me, and I think I only started three games before the new manager has come in and I have felt fit pretty much the whole season but you just have to stay ready, keep training and keep believing in yourself whilst telling yourself you’re good enough so when you get that opportunity, you try your best to stay in the team.
I'm happy I was able to take that opportunity tonight and repay the fans faith in me, it's the start of something the manager wants to build on and hopefully the fans can see it has been a great start.
I have played numerous positions but loved playing next to Robbie (Mckenzie) today, you have good people around you, you want to fight for them, you want to do everything for them and if they make a mistake they want to cover for them. It would be nice to get some wins and turn the draws into three points.
Speaking on Gareth Ainsworth....
It has been brilliant since he (Gareth Ainsworth) came in, I have heard lots of good things about him and spoke to players who played under him, and they all spoke so highly of him.
We have only had them here a week and him and Dobbo (Richard Dobson) have been brilliant and seem like top people. The boys are buzzing and want to leave everything out there for him, which I think you can see throughout the whole group.
We went a goal down at Harrogate and there was a lot of nervous energy on the pitch with the manager being disappointed as he wanted us to play more football, and I think to respond the way we did tonight, I think the manager will be pleased.
He breathes confidence and positivity throughout the squad and hopefully something we can build upon.
