BIRTHS...

1953 - Terry Cochrane

Born in Killyleagh, Cochrane had played for Castlewellan Town FC, Derry City, Linfield, Coleraine FC, Burnley, Eastern AA (Hong Kong) and Middlesbrough before coming to Priestfield Stadium in October 1983, initially on a month's loan after a falling out with boss Malcolm Allison at Ayresome Park.

The temperamental winger had international pedigree with Northern Ireland winning a total of 26 caps, 13 of which were as a substitute. His last two caps came as a Gills player against Scotland (December 1983) and Finland (May 1984).

Terry was skilful, he was able to knock in pin-point crosses with either feet, he could score goals, he was a crowd-pleaser and very much the joker of the pack.

He was part of an exciting team here at Gillingham as he, Martin Robinson and Dave Mehmet not only provided useful ammunition for goal-scorers David Shearer and Tony Cascarino but weren't adverse to the odd goal or two themselves, he made his Gills debut against Preston, scoring in a 2-0 home victory

The winner of the Player of the Year award for the 1984-85 campaign went on to score 21 goals in 131 appearances for the club, not bad for a free transfer.

After leaving Gillingham in 1986, Cochrane had short playing spells with Dallas Sidekicks, Millwall, Hartlepool United, Billingham Synthonia and Marske United before coaching the Saudi Arabian Military team. He also had spells as player-manager of the ill-fated South Bank and then Ferryhill Athletic.

Cochrane has since remained in the Teesside area, apart from a spell as manager at Carnegie Irish Premier League Glenavon FC, where he has coached youngsters as well as working in the media with the likes of Sky Sports and the Press Association.
