Gills new striker determined to impress in second stint
Gills new signing Antonio German says he is delighted to be back at the club and hopes to kick start his career by scoring as many goals as possible at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.
German signed a two-year deal earlier in the week following a successful one month loan stint last season, and the striker had no hesitation in re-joining the League Two Champions.
Speaking exclusively to the club’s official website he said:
“I’m very pleased; I loved it when I was here. The fans and players were great and I’m happy to be back.
“For me it was a no brainer, I wasn’t getting a look in at Brentford and here I was playing and enjoying myself and as a footballer if you enjoy yourself it’s nicer to play.
“I’m 21 now and I feel like I need to kick on and having got a two-year contract it means I can push on and it gives me an incentive to work harder and hopefully score goals for the club.
“It’s always good to come back after a month and a half off and the lads are in good shape.”
Antonio recalls scoring his only goal for the club, that coming in a 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle at Priestfield in March – a strike which Martin Allen nominated as his `Goal of the Season.`
He added: “I remember Bradley taking the free kick and I just hit it with my right foot on the turn but thankfully we won that game which was more important and to get the three points.
“If I had missed that I would have been more disappointed but Chris [Whelpdale] was following it in.”
Looking ahead to the new season, the forward sees no reason why the Gills cannot challenge for a second straight promotion.
He added: “I think we are good enough to challenge for the play-offs and if everyone is on their game we can definitely do that.
“I’m looking forward to the first game so I hope I can get in the starting line-up and show what I can do.”
