MOUSINHO: MIDWEEK WIN WAS HUGE BOOST

Gills on loan midfielder happy to travel to Rotherham off the back of hard fought win

John Mousinho said the team need to use the momentum gained from Tuesday’s win over Stevenage to their advantage as they prepare for a tough game against Rotherham at New York Stadium on Saturday.

The Gills travel to Yorkshire for the second time in the space of a few weeks after an impressive win over Sheffield United, and after a brilliant comeback performance midweek, John is hoping for back to back away league successes.

Speaking to the club’s official website he said: “We would like to have had more from the two home games going in to the weekend, but after the setback Saturday we showed a lot of determination and grit to get out of the hole we were in.

“To go with three points and take that to an away game it will be a massive boost; we have good away form in the league albeit just the one game from my experience.

“Rotherham will be a tough side, they got promoted last year but regardless of the money and the size of the club we need to go there remembering we are the League Two Champions from last year.

“We need to continue our momentum and make sure we take our game to them.”

John scored his first goal for the club, which turned out to be the winner on Tuesday, and he said the squad responded in the best possible way after going in behind at the interval.

He added: “It was a cracking game, we would prefer to go and win games three or four nil but that’s not going to happen every week.

“We will take the victory however it comes; it was a bit nerve wracking at the end and the fact that we conceded the goal in the first half we made it difficult for ourselves, but I thought we showed a lot in the second half to get the early goal and then score pretty much straight away.

“It was unfortunate we conceded the equaliser but there was just a lot of character from the boys to come back and get the third.

“We had quite a few set pieces and had been close to scoring, the second goal was from a second phase and it was a brilliant ball by Danny, I got in front of my marker and managed to get there.

“It was a great feeling just to see the ball nestle in the corner.

“I don’t score many headers; I’ve definitely got the size and the ability but I just need to show a bit more aggression in and around the box and I’ll definitely be working on that.”

John also praised new defender Donervon Daniels for the way he applied himself on his debut, and has been impressed with a number of the other younger players in the team.

He said: “It was a good second phase, sometimes you won’t score from a set piece so it’s great to recycle the ball and he finished it calmly and with composure and he was like that throughout the game.

“It was a real good solid performance, especially because he’s a young lad and we have a few young players playing very well now and it’s easy to forget a lot of them are in experienced in the league and that can be difficult at this level.

“They are doing fantastically well, Donveron included.”
