LEE: WE WILL FIGHT UNTIL THE END

Charlie Lee praises team-mates for consistent effort following defeat to Peterborough

Charlie Lee praised his team’s effort after their Tuesday night clash with Peterborough despite losing the game 2-0.

Lee, who returned to his former club, started on the bench but after 15 minutes the midfielder was called upon to play at centre back after Ryan Inniss picked up a hamstring injury.

Britt Assombalonga opened the scoring just before the break, and Tommy Rowe scored from distance to help guide Posh to all three points.

The Gills midfielder however thought the team worked extremely hard, and speaking to the awaiting media he said:

“We worked hard and nothing really went for us, and obviously the first goal knocked us back a bit in the first half and then we had a bit of a bad spell after that.”

He added: “The second goal killed the game off and they played very confidently after. They kept men forward and made it really hard for us. We looked a bit more solid then, but it’s obviously really hard to break them down when they keep the ball as well as they do.

“When they’re in form they can play as well as anyone in this league and probably the league above so it’s hard when you go 2-0 down against a team like that. But we worked hard as we always do; we will go to the end and if we had a bit of luck we might have got something out of it.”

Despite the defeat Lee believes that Gills can get the points they need to secure League One safety, he said: “We are still in a good spot in the league and after a couple of losses you start to look down but we are five points clear and we feel we can get a few more wins in.”
