On loan Gills striker happy to mark his first goal for the club with three points following victory over Carlisle
Joe Pigott said scoring the opener against Carlisle on Saturday at Brunton Park was `a great start` to his Gillingham career.
The striker, on loan from Charlton, marked his first start for the club with a goal just before the interval, and the visitors went on to clinch maximum points in a 2-1 win thanks to Cody McDonald’s goal in the 88th minute.
Pigott said scoring was a nice feeling but it was more important to get the win.
Speaking after the game he said: “It was a great start, I saw the defender come across and it opened up nicely, I just found a little gap.
“I’m just happy we got the three points as it's a hard place to come.
“It was terrible with the wind and rain, it was consistent and it was one of the coldest games I can remember playing in.”
Joe outlined what goals the team have put in place for the remainder of the season before praising strike partner Cody McDonald for the way he has been playing recently.
He said: “We want to pick up as many points as we can and hopefully that will lead us to safety and then who knows? We are in between play offs and relegation so you never know what is going to happen in this league.
“Cody is a goal scorer as we’ve seen but to be fair he brings a lot more than that, he is probably one of the most hardworking centre forwards I have played with.
“He’s a very good player.”
