MEALS WITH THE GILLS

Adam Barrett, Craig Fagan and Stuart Nelson join local schools for healthy eating session

On Monday afternoon MEMS Priestfield Stadium was visited by fifty students from five Medway schools who had the opportunity to learn about healthy eating and cooking from the Pros, thanks to a new programme developed by GFC Community Trust and catering company Lindley Group.

Young budding Jamie Oliver’s and Angela Hartnett’s came to the home of the Gills and were first treated to a children’s favourite of Burger and Chips.

This was a meal with a difference however as Head Chef Glynn Coomber prepared the meal in a healthier way, and then demonstrated to the group just how he did it, with the help of a few willing volunteers.

The children learnt about different types of fruit and vegetables, making their own smoothies and also completing some quiz questions and taking part in fruit and veg races, matching up the different types.

As well as having club mascot Tommy T along to help out, the children were also pleased to welcome along first teamers Adam Barrett, Stuart Nelson and Craig Fagan.

The trio were put on the spot with some excellent questions from the children, particularly about their diets, what they like to eat and their guilty pleasures.  Each of the children spoke with the players and asked for autographs also.

Adam Barrett said: “It’s great to get involved in community projects and the three of us were more than happy to lend our support to this initiative.

“We are just normal guys at the end of the day, we enjoyed being a part of the afternoon and we hope the pupils who attended went away very happy."

The event was organised between the GFC Community Trust and catering group Lindley, and the pair hope to collaborate on a regular basis to help local children learn about food and hopefully make some positive changes in their diets.

Head of Football in the Community Adam Lawrence commented: “This event has been a great success.  We had 50 children all eager to learn and listen to Head Chef Glynn and some of our community coaches and I’m sure they enjoyed the afternoon.

A huge thank you to Lindley Group for making the day possible and we look forward to the next Meals with the Gills event.”
