GILLS SUPPORT WALK TO GHANA EVENT

Gillingham FC are proud to have been a part of local charity event where local students have been raising money for Sport Relief

Last week Gillingham FC’s Community Trust coaches joined in the fun at St Margaret CE Junior School and their ‘Walk to Ghana’ charity event.

The event, which all students participated in, consisted of each pupil walking 40 laps of the sports field in an attempt to raise money for Sport Relief.

Sport Relief is a biennial charity event from Comic Relief, in association with BBC Sport, which brings together the worlds of sport and entertainment to raise money to help vulnerable people in both the UK and the world's poorest countries.

Our club mascot Tommy T, joined by Gills players Josh Hare, Stephen Butcher and Aaron Millbank were getting stuck in with the action with numerous photos being taken and autographs being signed.

Josh Hare said: ‘’It’s a real pleasure to be part of these charity events, it’s for such a great cause and the boys get a real buzz out of attending them.”

Community coach Jay Scally added: ‘’It’s fantastic to see St Margaret’s raising money for a worthy cause like Sport Relief. It’s a pleasure to be invited to these events and great to see everyone having fun and enjoying themselves.’’

Teacher Kim Bolden added: “We really encourage sport here and for the kids to be grateful of what they have and this was a perfect way of combining something energetic with raising awareness of the poor children in Africa.

“Almost every child completed the required 10 miles and some excelled themselves to the point where we have started the run home again too!

“We are very proud of what they achieved as it was a gruelling distance for children so young and the visit by Tommy T and the other guests made it a truly unforgettable afternoon, the children have already raised over a thousand pounds and the total is still rising.”

The GFC Community Trust would like to thank St Margaret’s for making everyone from the club so welcome and congratulate the students for all the money they raised for Sport Relief.
