EGAN: REGULAR GAMES KEY TO JOINING GILLS

John Egan reveals that having the chance to play regular games was key in his decision to join the Gills over the summer

John Egan says playing regular Football was a key factor in his decision to join the Gills in the summer.

Egan has been a regular in the starting line-up since signing from Premier League side Sunderland, and he’s pleased to be getting consistent games under his belt.

He said: “When I got released by Sunderland I had a few options but as soon as I spoke to the Manager he told me I was going to get a chance to play regular Football.

“Playing games was the biggest factor in my decision and the Manager said he would work with me on the training ground.

“When you’re out there at 3 o’clock it will improve you, you want to be in the thick of the action and I’m glad that I’ve taken my chance in pre-season and kept my place in the team.”

Gills lost 4-2 to MK Dons on the opening day and then suffered a 4-1 loss at Barnsley, but Egan says overall the defensive displays have been strong.

He added:  “MK Dons was a weird game and they scored from three set pieces, two of which were flukes which just hit people and went in and sometimes you can’t defend against that but I think overall we have done well enough defensively and are obviously getting better so it’s a good sign.”
