EDINBURGH ON MARK BYRNE

“His arrival strengthens us,” says the Gills manager

Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh believes the arrival of Irish midfielder Mark Byrne will strengthen his side for the 2016/17 EFL season.

The 27-year-old, who played under Edinburgh at Rushden & Diamonds and Newport County, joined the Gills from the Welsh side today.

“I know Mark well, having worked with him on two occasions previously,” said Edinburgh. “He’s a dynamic midfielder, a real all-rounder who can get goals yet cover a lot of ground at the same time.

“Mark’s driven, energetic and tenacious; he’s got that bite managers want in their midfield. Bringing him to the club is a fantastic coup for us - his arrival strengthens us, no question about it.

“I have no doubt that he’ll become a crowd favourite with the Gills supporters.”

Byrne is the club’s first new signing of the summer, and Edinburgh is confident there will be more new faces arriving at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium prior to the opening league game on Saturday, August 6.

Edinburgh added: “The chairman and I are working closely and tirelessly together every day, and we hope to have a few more deals concluded soon.”
