Goal of the month returns
Goal of the Month is back for the 2016/17 season, and August’s edition already includes contenders for the season’s best strike. With 15 goals scored, including five from new boy Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, it was difficult deciding the shortlist for August’s goal of the month, but here are our nominees:
#GILLSGOTM1: Emmanuel-Thomas opened his account for the Gills just 24 hours since signing on loan from QPR. The striker equalised against Southend United just before half-time from a well-worked corner routine with another new recruit and former QPR team-mate, Paul Konchesky.
#GILLSGOTM2: Rory Donnelly came on a substitute with the Gills losing 1-0 at home to Swindon. The striker’s curling effort left the goalkeeper with no chance and Donnelly earned his team a deserved point.
#GILLSGOTM3: Mark Byrne stunned Vicarage Road as Premier League Watford went crashing out of the EFL Cup. The Irishman left Ben Watson for dead, before unleashing a left-footed shot that Costel Pantilimon could do nothing about, leaving him rooted to the spot.
#GILLSGOTM4: Emmanuel-Thomas’ fifth goal for the club was an individual wonder strike. The 30-yard swirling shot was voted as Sky Bet’s EFL Goal of the Weekend and gave the Gills the impetus to grab a last-minute winner at Greenhous Meadow.
#GILLSGOTM5: Darren Oldaker scored on his full senior debut for the Gills in the EFL Trophy game at home to Luton Town. The 17-year-old’s drilled effort flew into the back of the net, but it wasn’t enough for the Gills to grab anything from the game.
