GILLS LEGENDS IN ACTION ON SUNDAY

Maidstone United will host a special benefit game on Sunday with several ex-Gills players in action.

A host of Gills legends will dust off their boots this coming Sunday and make the trip to the Gallagher Stadium for a special benefit match (2pm).

Andy Hessenthaler will manage an all-star Gills XI against a Maidstone XI, with the game being played in tribute to Peter Overton, a former Kent league midfielder, who is suffering with a brain tumour.

The former Gills boss has recruited the likes of Nicky Southall, Simon Osborn, Steve Butler, Guy Butters, Chris Hope, Mark Saunders, Junior Lewis and Tommy Johnson to appear in his team with Barry Hayles also expected to feature with all funds going towards Peter’s friends and family.

Ovey’s XI will be managed by former Gills centre-back Alan Walker and Lloyd Hume with Lee Shearer and Dave Forster expected to be in the line-up.

Adult tickets are just £5 with Under 18’s and Concessions at £2. Kick-off is at 2pm.

Hess said: “We are really looking forward to the game, it will be great to see some of the lads again but it’s all about raising money and we hope to see as many people there as possible.”

Alan Walker, who will jointly manage the Maidstone XI, said: “Pete was Captain for me at Sittingbourne, Tonbridge, Bromley, Fisher and Maidstone. He was an outstanding character and Sunday’s game will be extremely competitive as there are plenty of ex-Gills players in our team too such as Sam Tydeman, Craig Roser, James Pinnock, Lloyd Hume and Scott Lyndsey.

“I played in a few derbies and I know that Hessy and his boys are not playing this game as a stroll in the park, no-one will want to lose.”
