Gills boss captures the signing of former Hull City defender.
Steve Evans has made another exciting addition to his squad ahead of the 2020/21 Sky Bet League 1 season with the capture of Championship defender Robbie McKenzie.
The 21-year-old, who left Hull City a few weeks past after having come through the youth system at the KCOM Stadium, made 34 appearances for the club's first-team in total, including 12 last season in the EFL Championship.
He made his professional debut in an EFL Cup tie against Doncaster in August 2017 before making his league debut the following year against Rotherham United, in which he delivered a man of the match performance.
Robbie signed his contract at MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Friday morning before joining up with his new team-mates for training. He will be part of the squad that travels to Reading on Saturday for a pre-season friendly (1.30pm).
The Gills Gaffer was delighted to get his man, saying:
“We are delighted Robbie has signed. He is experienced at Championship level for such a young age and had numerous options when deciding his new club.
“He is excellent in any defensive position including midfield, a terrific signing. Without doubt he adds utility to a compact but talented squad of young men.
“We will help develop him and I have no doubts our supporters will like this talented lad."
Robbie added: “I’m really happy to be here; hopefully it will be a good season for everybody involved. I want to help the team out as much as I can, I’m one of those who will give 100% every time I play and Gillingham seems the perfect place to start a new chapter.
“Every game will be a battle to try and get some points; I can’t wait to get back out there.
"The opening day fixture is fantastic for me against a club I love very much, but want to win that badly for the Gills."
A full interview with Robbie will be available on iFollow shortly.
