One of the club's new recruits has been handed the Captain's armband for the 2020/21 season.
Kyle Dempsey has been named Gillingham Football Club’s team Captain for the 2020/21 Sky Bet League 1 season.
Dempsey, 24, signed for the club earlier this summer following his release from Fleetwood having played under Steve Evans during a loan spell with Peterborough United in January 2019.
The midfielder has already played over 200 games during his professional career, which began with Carlisle United six years ago, scoring 18 goals in all competitions for four different clubs.
On officially announcing his new skipper, Steve Evans said: “It was a tough call to make as there were several players I could have handed this responsibility to. Kyle, Stuart O’Keefe, Connor Ogilvie and Jacob Mellis could all have done the job, and they will be leaders themselves on the pitch, but I was keen to have a young Captain who would bring something new to the role and he was delighted to accept.
“Stuart O’Keefe will act as Vice-Captain, but in many ways it doesn’t matter who has the armband. Every single player on the pitch has a responsibility to lead by example, communicate effectively with their team-mates and act as a role model both on and off the pitch. However, I am confident Kyle will take naturally to the position and I know he will hold the role with immense pride.”
