Neil Harris delivers his reaction as Gills seal important point at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
Neil Harris admitted he was a proud man after watching his side go toe-to-toe with in-form Sheffield Wednesday, resulting in a deserved point to climb out of the relegation places.
Gills drew 0-0 at ME7 but created the best chances to win the game against the play-off chasers, the pick of which fell to Vadaine Oliver towards the end of the game, but his effort from inside the box went inches wide of the post.
The point ensures the club climb out of the Sky Bet League 1 relegation places, and the Gills boss said it was a positive afternoon's work.
He said: “The performance from the players was heroic, a lot of quality in it aswell. What was missing? The goal.
“A clean sheet mentality. Was there a winning mentality? Yes, there was, we just couldn’t get the ball over the line. It’s a performance that builds confidence and belief, again, and to be outside that bottom four is a huge effort from the players.
“We’ve not achieved anything yet, it’s just another step in the right direction. AFC Wimbledon have got a game in hand on us so that can change quickly, but all we can do is take care of our business.
“You have to take pride in that performance and I thought the crowd was excellent, there was a little spell where there was a bit of nervousness I think, that’s probably because of results elsewhere but the fans got behind us and that’s what I want at the Football Club; that’s why we are desperate to be in this league next year.
“We want to be welcoming teams of the stature of Sheffield Wednesday and we’ve got to fight tooth and nail for it, but we can only do that if the fans are with us for 90 minutes, and since I’ve been here they’ve been tremendous. I’ve praised the Football Club, I’ve praised the fans and praised my players today, and my staff.
"It’s a point, but it’s a point in the right direction."
