Macauley Bonne praises the performance as Gills defeat League 1 Charlton in convincing fashion.
Macauley Bonne was back amongst the goals as he opened the scoring in Gillingham's 2-0 win against Charlton Athletic in the Second Round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Bonne, a former Charlton player, knew that the Gills had to start quickly, and that is what they did, with his goal setting the tempo in the 26th minute. The striker was delighted to see Tim Dieng on the scoresheet, with Bonne full of praise for the midfielder.
With the Third Round draw approaching, Bonne is hoping for a home tie so the Gills can use the Priestfield atmosphere to their advantage.
Having been named the sponsor's 'Man of the Match', the 28-year-old stated that he was happy with life at the club so far, doing whatever he can to help the team.
Thoughts on the game...
It was always going to be a tough game. They are a League One side that is doing well and has some good players in their side, but I think that spurred us on a bit more with it being a home draw and them bringing a lot of fans.
I think the fast start when you win your first header and tackle, it sets the tone of the game. We got the first goal, which I scored. It was a sweet one for me because I was taking some real abuse. They are the things as a player where some players go under, but it spurs me on.
It was a good team performance and I am buzzing for the boys.
The Tim Dieng goal...
When you have got a player like Timmy Dieng, he is like a League Two Yaya Toure! He just keeps going and going! He is good technically and good in the air. When I saw him going through on goal, if you watched me, I did not even bother tracking. I know that he has the technique, and I knew that he would score it.
Who he wants in the Third Round...
For me, it is anyone at home because with anyone coming here, we can intimidate them. I have played at other clubs where you go to the league below or a few leagues below, and you think that it is going to be a walk in the park, but it really isn't. We showed Charlton that.
His time at Gills so far...
I am enjoying it. We have got a great bunch of lads. We are all a good group. For myself, I have got my own targets and where I want to be. I am not hitting them yet, but I am making sure that my game is my top form. If I come on the pitch to win the headers or hold up the ball, I make sure that is there. The goals will come, and that comes with confidence. Hopefully, now I can go on a run.
