Scott Malone signs for Gills

Gills add to their squad with the capture of Scott Malone.

The club is delighted to announce the signing of former Millwall and Cardiff City defender, Scott Malone.

The 32-year-old, who can also operate on the left side of midfield, was released by Millwall at the end of last season and has now put pen to paper on a permanent contract at Priestfield following a couple of weeks’ training with the first-team.

He featured in friendlies against Como and Charlton Athletic and could now play in a midweek friendly prior to Saturday’s game against Dagenham & Redbridge.

Malone, who began his career in the youth ranks at Wolves and went on to represent England at U19 level, made his professional debut while on loan at Southend United in November 2009 before spending much of the 2010/11 campaign with Burton Albion, scoring once in 26 appearances.

In July 2011 he joined Bournemouth on a permanent transfer and spent a season at Dean Court before agreeing to join Millwall in May 2012 as part of a swap deal that saw Josh McQuoid move in the opposite direction.

During his first spell at The Den, Scott scored five times in 71 outings but, in January of 2015, Cardiff City’s bid was accepted for the player and Malone moved to Wales.

Stints with Huddersfield, Fulham and Derby followed before he returned to The Den, initially on loan, in the summer of 2020 before making the move permanent a year later.

He made 34 appearances for the Lions last season, scoring one goal.

We officially welcome Scott to the club and an interview will be on iFollow in due course.
