Neil Harris speaks to the club website following the capture of Jonny Williams.
Gillingham manager Neil Harris says he cannot wait to get working with new signing Jonny Williams, and has described the arrival of the attacking-midfielder as the perfect injection of quality for his team.
Williams, who was sought after by clubs far and wide, has played at Premier League level as well as competing in two European Championships and a World Cup for the Welsh national team. At only 29, Harris believes the player may still have the best years of football ahead of him.
"First and foremost we have got an experienced player with brilliant pedigree," said an obviously delighted Harris. "He has played at the top end of international football and has a great understanding of the lower leagues.
"Jonny has had a brilliant career so far and, believe it or not, he has just had two seasons where he has played more football than he has ever done in his career which probably shows that he is just coming into the peak of it, with possibly the best years in front of him.
"He is a player who has always caused problems for my teams. He's an intelligent footballer with a superb work ethic to match and he has got the creative spark which I felt we lacked at times last season. Jonny will bring that spark. He is an excellent character and a leader, you need that in the changing room.
"He has been linked with a lot of clubs all around the world but Jonny has not wavered from the fact that he wanted to be close to home. We have always had a good relationship as opposing player and manager. In the jigsaw puzzle we are putting together it is fair to say that Jonny was one of our primary targets."
