Monday's match winner says it was a credit to the club that Gills put in such a strong performance at Salford with over 750 fans making the final day trip.
Cheye Alexander lashed home a powerful 85th minute winning penalty as the Gills finished their 2022/23 Sky Bet League Two campaign on a high at Salford and then said he wished the new season could start ‘right now’.
It was another strong performance from the Gills who eventually finished 12 points and six places clear from relegation after they had occupied the bottom spot for lengthy periods of the season during one of the most challenging periods in their 130 year history. Most importantly, however, the impressive 1-0 victory sent out another clear message that the Kent side won’t be in the league to make up the numbers next year.
“Great game, great result,” reflected the defender. “We came into the game hoping to finish the season well and give the fans something to go home happy with and thankfully we have done that. We came here, dominated the game and had the best chances so it is a credit to us.
“I practice penalties in training all the time, I knew I was going to score. I pick my spot, don’t change my mind and try and get a good contact, if I can get a good contact I know the keeper is not going to save it anyway. I think I have shown that I am definitely a penalty taker and that I am in contention for next year.
“It was the last game of the season and we didn’t have anything to play for and to have that many fans travel down here is amazing, it is a credit to the fans and a credit to the club.
“We are going into next year with a great squad and everyone is excited. We are happy to get some rest but we are raring to go.
“We don’t have much time off, maybe five or six weeks and within that we have about a week and half or two where we are not doing anything, so we are working a lot throughout the summer. I think everyone is excited to get back to the club. Everyone has high expectations but we just need to come in and do our jobs.
“I am super excited for next season and I can’t wait to get going. The break is needed but we would have liked to have gone straight into next season right now.”
