Clemence | "Let's go and take them on"

Stephen Clemence says his players are looking forward to welcoming Premier League opposition to Priestfield.

Davids have been toppling Goliaths in the FA Cup Third Round for many, many years and Gillingham Head Coach Stephen Clemence believes his men now have a chance to take down their own giant.

In many fans' eyes, the third round is the most anticipated date in the footballing calendar, when teams from the lower reaches of the pyramid get a shot at taking the scalp of elite opposition. This weekend, Clemence's men get their opportunity to do just that against Premier League side Sheffield United, although as he admits, it certainly won't be easy.

"The boys are excited about this game," said the Gills boss ahead of the cup clash. "I know I am excited about it. I can see the boys are looking forward to it by the way they are on the training ground.

"The third round is such an exciting time of the year for football fans. You see League Two teams like ourselves taking on a Premier League team on their home patch, it's exciting. I have had a lot of good memories in the cup as a coach, playing in it and watching it, and I'm hoping to have another good memory this weekend.

"We are going to have to play really, really well to get a result and we will need our fans right behind us, like I know they will be. I am excited to see a full house at Priestfield. The fans are going to be huge for us. Thanks to all the fans who are coming, be loud and proud and get behind the boys and be that extra man. That will really help us.

"It will be a difficult game, they have top, top players but we have some good players and they should be feeling confident in themselves. That is the challenge to my lads, go and show us what you can do, go and take on an elite player in an elite team, go and test yourself.

"Do I believe they are capable of an upset? Why not! It will be very difficult. We will need a lot of things to go right for us on the day, but like everyone always says, it's the FA Cup and you often see upsets in the third round and why can't that be us?

"We will give them something to think about. The pressure will be on them, they will be expected to win and we will not, but I do expect the boys to give them a good game and give it a right go. Hopefully we can still be in it towards the end of the game and let's see what can happen.

"There is no point in playing if we can't believe that. Let's go and take them on and see where we are on Saturday evening. We won't sit back and wait to get beat. It's a big challenge, but we are going to try and make an impact."
