Youth Report | Gillingham 0-3 Sunderland

Sunderland eliminate Gillingham in FA Youth Cup.

Gillingham have been eliminated from the FA Youth Cup following a 3-0 defeat to Sunderland at Priestfield on Tuesday evening.

A place in the fifth round was up for grabs, with the Black Cats now going on to play Swindon at home.

Mark Moss had to do without the services of the injured Will de Wilde, with Harry Bridle only fit enough to make the bench.

Sunderland had the better of the possession in the early stages but Gills stuck to their shape well and resisted pressure well, that was until the 20th minute when Sunderland took the lead. A cross from Tommy Watson was cleared as far as Kailem Beattie who fired a shot beyond Tobey Smith from the edge of the area.

Five minutes later and the hosts had a half chance to equalize when Kai Garrett rounded his man, with the keeper having come out of his box. The gap was ever narrowing and the forward was denied the opportunity to shoot, the visitors got back and cleared their lines.

The hosts nearly got back into the game on 52 minutes when Joshua Bayliss played a great ball to his left to find Jimmy Heasman. Inside the box the forward went for goal but narrowly missed the target.

The Black Cats doubled their advantage just before the hour mark when a scramble inside the Gills box resulted in the ball making its way to Trey Ogunsuyi who clinically found the back of the net giving Smith no chance.

Creamer headed wide following a cross from Chris Rigg and Ogunsuyi struck the woodwork before Sunderland eventually did get their third when Joshua Robertson received the ball inside the box and guided an effort beyond the Gills keeper to all but seal the tie.
